When Does YouTube Start Paying You?
YouTube pays after you join the Partner Program and your earnings pass the AdSense payment threshold. Here are the requirements, the review wait and the payment dates.

YouTube starts paying you once three things have happened: you are accepted into the YouTube Partner Program, you have earned revenue, and your balance has reached the AdSense payment threshold. For most new creators the slowest step is the first one. After that, payments follow a monthly schedule.
Step 1: Meet the Partner Program requirements
Per YouTube's Partner Program help page, ad revenue requires 1,000 subscribers plus one of the following:
- 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months, from public long-form videos, or
- 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, from public Shorts in the Shorts feed.
Watch hours from the Shorts feed do not count toward the 4,000 hours.
There is also an earlier tier. YouTube's Partner Program explainer says creators with 500 subscribers and either 3,000 watch hours on long-form videos or 3 million Shorts views unlock fan funding features and can promote products. Ad revenue sharing starts at the higher tier.
Step 2: Apply and wait for review
Accept the terms in YouTube Studio and link an active AdSense account. The help page says a decision typically arrives "in about 1 month," and that delays and repeat reviews can stretch that out.
Note one upcoming change. YouTube says that starting February 1, 2027, it is updating Partner Program terms, and creators must review and accept the updated terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027 to keep fully monetizing. Check the help page for the latest requirements before you apply, because thresholds and terms can change.
Step 3: Earn revenue and reach the payment threshold
Revenue is paid through AdSense. According to the AdSense payments help page:
- If your balance reaches the payment threshold by the end of the month, and there are no payment holds, you are issued a payment between the 21st and the 26th of the following month. Google's example: a balance that reached $100 during January is paid at the end of February.
- If you are below the threshold, your finalized earnings roll over to the next month.
The threshold depends on your currency, so check AdSense for your exact amount. Google's own example uses $100.

A realistic timeline
| Stage | What happens | Typical timing |
|---|---|---|
| Reach the thresholds | 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours or 10M Shorts views | Depends entirely on your channel |
| Application review | YouTube reviews your channel | About 1 month, per YouTube |
| First earnings | Revenue starts accruing after approval | From approval onward |
| First payment | Paid once the balance reaches the threshold | 21st to 26th of the month after you reach it |
Because nobody can predict how fast a channel grows, the first two rows have no fixed date. Plan for at least two months between your application and your first payment, and longer if your early revenue is small.
What to do while you wait
You cannot speed up the review, but you can prepare. Keep your uploads public, avoid Community Guidelines strikes, and keep posting on a steady schedule so that the watch hours keep building. If you want to estimate what the first months might look like, try the YouTube revenue calculator and read how much YouTube pays for 1,000 views. Our YouTube platform guide covers the Shorts versus long-form trade-off.
posterly can queue YouTube videos and Shorts ahead of time through the YouTube scheduler, which helps keep an upload rhythm while you chase the thresholds.
FAQ
How many views do you need to get paid on YouTube?
Views alone do not qualify you. You need 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, per YouTube's Partner Program help page. A video can have many views and still miss the watch hour requirement.
How long does YouTube take to approve monetization?
YouTube says a decision typically arrives in about 1 month after you accept the terms and link an active AdSense account. Delays and multiple reviews can extend that time.
When does YouTube pay out each month?
If your AdSense balance reaches the payment threshold, payments are issued between the 21st and the 26th of the month after the one in which you reached it.
Can you earn money on YouTube before the Partner Program?
Not from ads. The earlier 500 subscriber tier unlocks fan funding features and product promotion, according to YouTube, but ad revenue sharing needs the higher tier. You can still earn from sponsorships or affiliate links outside YouTube's own programs.
