Instagram can change what it displays, so treat the sizes as safe targets.

Which Instagram photo size should I use?

Use 1080 x 1350 pixels (4:5) when you want a feed photo to take up as much of the screen as possible, and 1080 x 1080 pixels (1:1) for a square. Use 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16) for Stories and for a Reel cover. Export at 1080 pixels wide or more so the photo is not upscaled.

The profile grid is a separate view that crops wider photos to a tall tile. Preview it with the Instagram grid planner, or split one panoramic photo with the carousel splitter. For more formats and limits, read the Instagram guide, or schedule Instagram posts with posterly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best photo size for Instagram?

For a feed photo, 1080 x 1350 pixels (4:5) fills the most screen on mobile, and 1080 x 1080 pixels (1:1) is the square option. Stories and Reels use 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16).

What aspect ratios can an Instagram feed photo use?

posterly accepts a feed photo anywhere from 9:16 (tall) to 1.91:1 (wide). The standard presets are 1:1, 4:5, 1.91:1, and 4:5 fills the most screen on mobile. Stories use 9:16.

Does Instagram crop photos on the profile grid?

Yes. The profile grid shows a tall tile that centre-crops wider photos, while the post itself opens uncropped. The Instagram grid planner previews the crop before you post.

Will a smaller photo still upload?

Yes, but it is upscaled and can look soft. posterly recommends a source at least 1080 pixels wide. The smallest feed size in posterly's guidance is 320 x 320 pixels.

Can I resize a photo to these sizes here?

Yes. The resizer on this page runs in your browser with no signup, and your photo is not uploaded to posterly. For the full set of platform presets, use the image resizer.
