What are UTM parameters?

UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are tags you add to the end of a URL. When someone clicks on a URL with UTM parameters, those tags are sent back to Google Analytics for tracking.

The 5 Standard UTM Parameters:

  • Source (utm_source): Identifies which site sent the traffic (e.g. google, newsletter).
  • Medium (utm_medium): Identifies what type of link was used (e.g. cpc, email).
  • Campaign (utm_campaign): Identifies a specific product promotion or strategic campaign (e.g. spring_sale).
  • Term (utm_term): Identifies search terms.
  • Content (utm_content): Identifies what specifically was clicked to bring the user to the site (e.g. banner, textlink).
